Metro journey planning

The station is only one part of the trip.

Sarathi is designed to plan Namma Metro as a door-to-door Bengaluru journey. Reaching the station, changing lines and walking from the destination station are counted alongside the Metro ride.

Does Sarathi support Namma Metro?

Yes. Sarathi is designed to include Namma Metro in Bengaluru journey planning and to compare it with BMTC buses and walking. Sarathi is an independent AUMLayer product and is not an official BMRCL or Namma Metro application.

1. What Metro data does Sarathi use?

The current public count is 85 stations. The Metro snapshot used by Sarathi is documented as provisional community data with validator warnings and approximate intermediate stop times. Those limitations are published rather than hidden.

See Data sources — Namma Metro / BMRCL for the provenance and the current caution around that snapshot.

2. Getting to the station matters

A station can be geographically close but still be a poor choice if the access walk is awkward or another stop connects better to the destination. Sarathi uses a Bengaluru OpenStreetMap-based walking graph prepared for OpenTripPlanner so access and egress can be part of the same plan.

This is why “nearest Metro” is not automatically equivalent to “best journey.”

3. Interchange walks belong in the total

If a trip changes Metro lines or combines bus and Metro, the transfer is part of the journey rather than free time between two route segments. Sarathi’s planning model is intended to show that transfer and the surrounding walking in the same door-to-door trade-off.

4. When is Metro better than a bus?

There is no universal answer. A Metro option may have a predictable corridor but require more walking or a feeder bus. A direct BMTC service may be simpler even if it is slower. Sarathi keeps Fastest, Shortest route, Likely cheapest, Fewest changes and Direct bus views so a traveller can see more than one optimisation objective.

Read the bus + Metro + walking journey planner guide for the multimodal comparison.

5. Are Namma Metro times live in Sarathi?

Only a value explicitly marked Live should be treated as live. Published timetable information remains Scheduled. Sarathi also uses Typical, Cached and Unavailable to keep different data states distinct.

See Data freshness and time labels for the full methodology.

6. What Sarathi does not claim

  • No official BMRCL partnership or endorsement.
  • No ticket sales or fare amounts.
  • No guarantee that a provisional snapshot matches a last-minute service change.
  • No “live” label unless a fresh, authorised realtime feed is connected.
Follow station boards, operator announcements and staff directions while travelling. They override planning information on the public site.
